A little bit of science, experimenting and observation with a little bit of imaginary small world play = Awesome fun!
Here is how we did it...
First we made our volcano using a small bottle, wrapped in a cone of orange paper with some modelling clay moulded to the top to seal the paper.
Alternatively you could make an even better volcano from playdough with a small bottle buried in the centre or of course go to the extreme of a paper mâché & painted one, that would look tops!
Our Erupting Volcano is just a quick throw together one and a throw away after play Volcano.
Once the Volcano is ready I put some Bicarb Soda in the container.
In another small bottle I mixed Tomato Sauce, (or ketchup) with a small bit of water and a dash of dishwashing liquid.
The dishwashing liquid helps it to become frothy & orange colour.
The tomato sauce contains vinegar which reacts with the bicarb soda to cause the expansion and fizzing affect. Now, because it is a small amount of vinegar this will cause a longer lasting and slower eruption which is perfect for some pretend Dino Play. However if you wanted a bigger gush and a faster explosion, you could add in a dash of vinegar.
Mix it all together in a separate container and then prepare; add dinosaurs, maybe a small world set up and make sure your child is ready.
Get your child to pour in the tomato sauce mix in to the waiting Volcano. Then they can start to play and wait for the lava to ooze out.
Dimples played with the Dinosaurs pretending that they were stomping away from the hot lava "ahhh it is melting my feet" it lasted a few moments, slowly erupting and melting down the side of his volcano. Then, once it was too slow, he experimented with it by giving it a shake, a mix and of course poking his fingers in to feel it. He gave it a big whiff to see what it smelt like.
